Republican C-SPAN Caller Says Elections Were About "That Nigger Obama"
A Republican caller to C-SPAN's "Washington Journal" program warned his fellow GOPers not to get too extreme in the wake of their electoral victories Tuesday—which, he added, were all "about race" because "Republicans hate that nigger Obama."
TPM flagged the incident, which occurred this morning:
The caller, who gave his name as Anthony from San Diego, California, identified himself as a Republican and started out talking about the direction he thinks the new GOP majority in Congress should take.
"I would just like to say, that the Republicans — and I'm a Republican — please do not overreach," the caller began. "I know they're going to overreach but I'm telling you, if you advocate for the repeal of Obamacare and you get too extreme, then Hillary Clinton will be elected president in 2016."
"This is about race," he added. "The Republicans hate that nigger Obama."
Host Steve Scully quickly cut off the caller after he dropped the racial slur.
"Okay, I'm gonna stop you there," Scully said. "We're not gonna use that kind of language."
Scully quickly pivoted to a call from Beverly in Cary, North Carolina.
There is, of course, no way to substantiate whether Anthony was in fact a Republican, but GOP candidates this cycle made no bones about casting their elections as a referendum on America's first nonwhite president; Sen. Mitch McConnell's campaign staff in Kentucky "had a running contest of who could get more 'Obama' mentions into daily newspaper accounts," Politico reports.
